At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Victoria Capital Region (BBBSV), our vision is that all young people realize their full potential. When children and youth are faced with adversity - challenges like parental absence, family substance abuse, or living in poverty - their potential is threatened. Our programs support these children through community and school-based mentoring programs. With the support of our mentoring coordinators, young people can build a relationship with a trusted adult who consistently shows up for them, shares new experiences with them, and inspires them to grow into whoever they dream of being.
BBBSV programs are always offered free-of-cost to families and children. The costs to run our programs are funded primary by community donations, grants, sponsorships, fundraising events, and our social enterprise clothing donation centre. Each donation of $1 is returned as up to $23 in community benefits through improved outcomes for mentored youth. Community involvement is essential to our ability to provide local kids with the mentoring support they need.
We are always in need of volunteer mentors to spend time one-on-one with children in the community or at school each week. We also train volunteers to facilitate our group mentoring program for female-identifying youth, B You: Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds. BBBSV staff guide volunteers through an interviewing and screening process focused on child safety. Our mentoring coordinators are there every step of the way: providing training on building developmental relationships with youth, learning about you to find your best mentoring match, and offering support along your mentoring journey.
When we match a young person with a mentor, we start something incredible - a life-changing mentoring relationship with the child's needs at its core.
