SMUS is a special place for hundreds of current students and families, thousands of alumni across the world, and thousands more community members of past and present. One thing that makes it so special is the ability to welcome many students and families from various backgrounds, helping SMUS stay economically and socially diverse and enriching all students' experiences in and out of the classroom. "I knew my worth and SMUS saw my worth, too. I can think of so many teachers and staff at SMUS who have made a lasting impact on my life. The connections that you make as a student with teachers and other educators at SMUS are long-lasting. Everyone who works at SMUS is so invested in every student's life, both personal and academic." This February, we're highlighting stories of SMUS alumni whose educational journey were impacted by Financial Aid — like Shelby Hoogland '15. To read Shelby's experience, and learn how you can help support students like them by contributing to Financial Aid February, visit https://lnkd.in/g67ts2N9

While considering his options for medical school, a neighbour of Nekhil Govender '21 recommended the Atlantic Bridge, a centralized application system which allows international students to apply to six medical schools in Ireland. With AP courses from his time at SMUS, a year at UVic under his belt, and no MCAT or GAMSAT required, Nekhil qualified for a 5-year program at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). He says that balancing academics, athletics and arts at SMUS taught him about time management and instilled a work ethic that prepared him for the intensive pace of medical school. For Nekhil, pursuing RCSI is so much more than just a university program; "medicine is not a career path, but a calling." Visit https://lnkd.in/ggESwhYC to read more about Nekhil's journey in the final edition of a three-part series detailing SMUS students' various pathways to medical school.
