Event Description: For more information and to register, visit, http://www.eventbrite.ca/o/volunteer-victoria-1749897131 Join Michelle Colussi, Social Enterprise expert, and panelists Lee Heron of Fernwood NRG and Yolanda Meijer of Habitat for Humanity for this two hour session focused on short presentations and discussion around four questions that boards need to answer as they begin to explore enterprising opportunities: What are the benefits of operating a social enterprise? What are the risks of operating a social enterprise? Can we own a business and earn profits? What is CRA’s view? What is the role of the board in enterprise development and management? Key decisions for decision-makers. There will be an overview of and an introduction to social enterprise article emailed out in advance and those who have questions will be encouraged to contact the instructor before the workshop. The session includes additional handouts and these will also be emailed to all participants afterwards. About the Facilitators: Michelle Colussi has worked in education, recreation, with youth at risk, in mental health, the arts and as a board facilitator and business trainer. Her work with the Canadian Centre for Community Renewal over the last 16 years gave her a solid grounding in community economic development including work with First Nations, rural development and social enterprise facilitation and training. For three years, Michelle co-ordinated the Development Wheel Project: bringing provincial and regional social enterprise development organizations together to test approaches to strengthening social enterprise in three regions of the province. Michelle also delivered the Social Enterprise course in the SFU CED Certificate Program for several years was recently a Community Fellow at the University of Victoria Centre for Co-op and Community Based Economies where she researched social enterprise ecosystem models. She is a strong advocate for the community based sector in general and for “enterprising non-profits” as a way of strengthening social innovation and impacts. Lee Herrin is the Executive Director of Fernwood NRG, which owns Cornerstone Cafe, a Hair Salon, and commercial and residential buildings. Yolanda Meijer is the Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity, which owns ReStore. About the Venue: This workshop will be held at Fernwood NRG. Coffee, tea and water will be provided. If you would like something more substantial, please feel welcome to bring snacks. Parking can be found behind Fernwood NRG.
