Event Description: Join Vic Murray, PhD and non-profit governance expert, for this Board tune up workshop for new or established board members who’d like to brush up on healthy governance practices. Just like individuals, boards of directors need to be fit and healthy to do the important work of governance that contributes so much to the success of our community’s nonprofit organizations. But, for many of us as individuals, we know how we can unintentionally let our fitness levels slip and end up feeling and performing less than our best. And so it is with boards. In the case of individuals the formula for getting back in shape is simple – get a health and fitness checkup, treat any problems that show up and stay healthy through proper diet and exercise. In the case of boards, the formula is the same – health checkups (i.e. governance practice assessments), treatment of problems and fitness exercises but of course all specifically designed for these unique bodies. This workshop will do three things: Provide you with a tool for diagnosing the health of your board. Discuss treatments for specific board health issues. Provide you with a set of "keep fit exercises" for ensuring that your board stays sharp and effective into the future. About the Facilitator: Vic Murray, PhD., is an Adjunct Professor in the School of Public Administration at the University of Victoria. His primary area of research is the subject of governance in nonprofit organizations with an emphasis on determinants of board effectiveness. He has been a member of numerous boards, chaired several and headed the governance committees of several more. His most recent publication is as editor and contributor to The Management of Charitable and Nonprofit Organizations in Canada (Lexis Nexis Butterworths) About the Venue: This workshop will be held in the Volunteer Victoria Learning Centre. Light beverages are provided. Parking after 6pm is free for street parking, or $2 for the evening after 6pm in a City Parkade.
