Event Description: Building on the success of the last grantwriting workshop we held, join Lisa Mort-Putland and panelists for this second offering. Finding and writing grants can be a fulfilling and rewarding process. But new and emerging grant writers often find themselves wondering: What and how much to include in grant applications, Where to find grants and how much to ask for, or Which items should be included in a budget? In this workshop, Lisa will guide you through the steps of preparing to write grants, review different types of grant applications, and provide tips and tools to help you find and choose grants, write effectively, and report back to funders. From 11-12:30pm, participants will have an opportunity to engage in a Q and A session with a panel of experienced grant writers and grant reviewers. The panel members include: Meghan Mergaert, Kari Frazer, and Tara Taggart Participants will walk away with: - A greater understanding of grant options and trends in granting - Ideas to streamline grant writing and improve success - Examples of successful grant applications - Checklists for preparing and submitting grants, and reporting back to funders - Exposure to local experts who regularly review grants About the Facilitator: Lisa Mort-Putland is the Executive Director of Volunteer Victoria. Lisa holds a B.A. in Drama and a Masters in Public Administration with a focus on non-profit management. Prior to working with VV Lisa was the Development Manager for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Victoria and spent more than 25 years working and volunteering in the museum and heritage sector. Lisa served on the 2011 Cabinet of the United Way of Greater Victoria and currently sits as Board Chair for Point Ellice House Preservation Society. Panelists: Kari Frazer has been practicing fundraising, marketing and media relations for over 25 years. She has taught marketing at the college level and facilitated local, provincial and national workshops in fundraising, board development and social media. Kari holds the international Certified Fund Raising Executive designation and earned a Masters of Arts Degree in Leadership and Training with a focus on maximizing ethical fundraising practices among small non-profits. Her current passions are social media, coaching, consulting and showing you the way. Meghan Mergaert is the Development Manager at the Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria. She has been designing projects/programs for marginalized populations, specifically immigrant and refugee populations and preparing funding proposals since 2005 within the non-profit sector primarily in Greater Victoria, BC and recently in Sierra Leone. Meghan has considerable experience understanding the needs of immigrant populations and “how to speak the funder language” at the municipal, provincial, federal levels and in both private and public sectors. Meghan brings experience developing strategic partnerships, designing innovative youth programming and understanding how projects from small grants fit into the larger organizational structure. Tara Taggart joined the Community Impact team at the United Way of Greater Victoria in January 2012. As Community Investment Associate she is part of the staff team that works with the allocations committee to review funding applications and make funding recommendations. The opportunity to connect with people working to influence positive change in the community is what attracted Tara to the Community Investment Associate position and keeps her inspired everyday.
