Event Description:
For more information and to register, visit, http://www.eventbrite.ca/o/volunteer-victoria-1749897131 Can you remember the deep and lasting effect of a mentor who influenced your life in a powerful way? The word “mentor” originates in Greek mythology and is defined as a teacher and protector. This half-day workshop is designed to revitalize the idea of how your experience, skills, strengths and relationship-building talents can be used to inspire and engage others in your workplace. Our goal is to help you more effectively integrate new volunteers, practicum students and new staff to your organization. In Mentoring for Engagement and Succession, you will: •Define mentoring through lived experiences, story and theory •Understand the roles of a mentor and the three levels of mentoring •Explore four key leadership styles and when to use each one depending on the situation •Understand the readiness level of your staff and/or volunteers you are mentoring About the Facilitator Cathy McKenzie, MA in Leadership and Training, has a diverse professional history as an emergency room RN, a Coroner and a manager of volunteers at the Victoria City Police Dept. In 2000 she Co-founded Learning by Heart Consulting with her husband, Ed. As an educator, facilitator and coach she believes in creating an engaging space for deep and transformative learning. Her public and private sector programs focus on personal leadership, communication, mentoring, coaching, dialogue practices and building dynamic teams. She brings a positive, bright and passionate energy for leadership to everything she does and has been a natural mentor across generations. Cathy is proud to be long-standing Associate Faculty at RRU and The Banff Centre. Ed McKenzie, MA, uses the concept of values-based leadership and the principles of dialogue to engage the hearts and minds of others. His approach is reflected in the research project he carried out for his Master of Arts in Leadership and Training, entitled “Values in the Voices: A Dialogue.” This research, carried out through learning circles and interviews, provided a number of recommendations for his project sponsor, Leadership Victoria. With a calm, clear and friendly presence, Ed prides himself on being able to draw out the richness that exists in every individual and group he works with. Through Learning By Heart, the company he operates with his wife Cathy, Ed focuses on personal leadership, learning, team development, communication, coaching and large and small group facilitation. Ed serves as associate faculty at Royal Roads and The Banff Centre. About the Venue information This workshop will be held at the Volunteer Victoria Learning Centre. Light snacks and beverages provided. Parking is most easily found at the City Parkades (Yates or View st), or at the Bay Centre parkade.
