Event Description: As a busy coordinator or supervisor of volunteers, have you ever wondered how to best include volunteers with disabilities in your organization? Have you been flummoxed by questions of accommodations and accessibility? At this dynamic workshop, you will have the opportunity to explore the benefits and challenges of welcoming volunteers with disabilities, as well as questions regarding interviews, role assignments, training, communication and much more. Additionally, you will have the chance to engage with individuals with disabilities about their volunteer experiences. This workshop will provide you with practical knowledge and the tools you need to successfully and confidently integrate individuals with disabilities into your voluntary organization. Participants will walk away with: - A thorough grasp of the benefits, challenges and opportunities of welcoming volunteers with disabilities - A better understanding of best practices in recruitment, orientation and retention of volunteers with diverse abilities - Practical tips and simple tools to make their organization truly accessible to a wide variety of volunteers About the Facilitator: Heather Bergink coordinates the Networks program at Lifetime Networks, which develops and maintains circles of lasting friendship and support for adults with developmental disabilities in Victoria. Previously, Heather supported individuals with disabilities and managed a large group of employees and volunteers in L’Arche communities in Canada and the UK. She received her Master’s degree in Critical Disability Studies in 2010. Lifetime Networks Victoria has been providing lasting friendships and supports to adults with developmental disabilities since 1998. As well as the Networks program, we offer Continuing Education, Community Engagement Support, Employment Development and Fine Arts & Social Programs, all within an inclusive, safe and welcoming setting. About the Venue: This workshop will be held at the Volunteer Victoria Learning Centre. Light snacks and beverages provided. Parking is most easily found at the City Parkades (Yates or View st), or at the Bay Centre parkade. First Hour Free vouchers are available if you choose to park in City Parkades.
