Event Description: For more information and to register, visit, http://www.eventbrite.ca/o/volunteer-victoria-1749897131 Many organizations are able to inspire people to join the Board of Directors – but what happens after they join? It makes sense for a Board to be as diverse as the population the organization serves, given that the Board is responsible for directing, influencing, and monitoring an organization. Approaching interested members is one thing, but welcoming and mentoring these members can be quite another. This workshop aims to unpack what it means to be a diverse board and how simple shifts in your practices can create a safe and inclusive space where everyone thrives. This workshop will cover: 1) How to identify what diversity means for your board 2) Look at the demographics of the community your agency serves 3) How to create a positive and productive board experience for each member 4) Leveraging the already existing, and perhaps unofficial, mentorship plans your board has to build a formal process 5) What current practices or language could cause discomfort for new and diverse board members About the Facilitators: Julia-Anne Morris joined Volunteer Victoria in June 2012 managing their Youth Programs. She has a Bachelor’s of Child and Youth Care from the University of Victoria, where her practicum experience focused on engaging youth through meaningful relationships and family counselling. She has many years experience volunteering in the community, including as a Board Member for the United Way of Greater Victoria and programmer and facilitator for Restorative Justice Victoria. Julia-Anne’s passion for volunteering and working with youth are what drew her to this position. When she is not at work, Julia-Anne can be found cooking, drinking tea, or walking with her family along the gorgeous beaches of Victoria! Julena Breel joined Volunteer Victoria in September 2012 as a programmer for the Youth Team. She graduated from the University of Victoria with a degree in Social Sciences, majoring in Psychology. She has volunteered throughout her life, mainly in capacities working with youth who have been through emotional or physical trauma. Julena is passionate about traveling, pushing herself at the gym, spending time in nature and anything to do with youth.
