Event Description: Front-line supervisors and volunteer coordinators aren’t always involved directly in recruitment decisions. However, once that recruitment decision has been made, they can really help their own cause by getting new recruits off to a good start, and by helping them learn something new each and every day. That’s what this workshop is about: a) orienting each new recruit to the job and the job setting, ensuring a great fit between the individual and the organization; and b) developing the new recruit into a fully-functioning, productive team member who seeks out opportunities to learn and puts them to good use every day. In this workshop Doug Kerr will lead participants to map out an approach to the orientation of new recruits that supervisors and co-ordinators can tailor to their own work setting. This approach is based on the premise that every supervisor can and should take responsibility for integrating new recruits into their team and helping them to get fully ‘up to speed’ as quickly as possible. This approach doesn’t require special authorities or resources, just effort and imagination on the part of the supervisor. The payoff is a happy, productive worker who wants to stay and contribute. By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to: Develop an approach to on-the-job-orientation that addresses the needs of both the new recruit and the organization. Take full responsibility for orienting a new recruit – from planning the new recruit’s arrival to the complete integration of the new recruit into the team. Involve all members of the team in the orientation of their new team member. Assess and facilitate the fit between the new recruit’s values and the organization’s culture. Work with the new recruit’s strengths from the first day on the job, expanding responsibilities gradually over the first few months on the job. Use a simple goal-setting process to help the new recruit become increasingly self-managing. Make an informed and fair decision about confirming the new recruit in the job at the end of the initial probation period. About the Facilitator: Over the past 40 years Doug Kerr has worked with a broad range of clientele, including social-profit organizations, all levels of business and industry, post-secondary institutions, and public sector organizations. Doug is known internationally as the original developer of the Instructional Skills Workshop, an intensive, video-based micro-teaching training program for post-secondary instructors. Doug has trained thousands of workshop participants in the art of orienting new recruits and training-on-the-job. About the Venue: This workshop will be held at the Volunteer Victoria learning space. Light refreshments, baked goods and fruit will be served, please bring your own lunch or buy one from a local establishment. Parking is most easily found at the Bay Centre underground parking or the Yates or View st City of Victoria Parkades.
