Event Description: This two-day workshop is designed to help participants identify and use effective strategies for interpersonal communication in the workplace. Respect and trust are at the heart of effective communication and those core concepts are reinforced throughout the training. In the industrial marine it is imperative for workers at all levels to communicate effectively, resolve conflict and take advantage of coaching and mentoring opportunities in the context of the unique culture of the industrial marine workplace. Geared to the needs of existing and future leaders, managers and supervisors, this workshop is one of three new leadership skills courses designed specifically for the shipbuilding and ship repair industry. The other titles in this series include Coaching and Mentoring and Conflict Resolution. While each course is designed as a stand-alone workshop, it is suggested that participants consider this Interpersonal Communication workshop as a foundation. Topics include building rapport, active listening, giving and receiving performance feedback and positive, constructive criticism. Acknowledgement, playback and communicating with different personalities will be examined and practiced. The use of communication technology including email and instant messaging is also addressed. Workshop Objectives – through active participation in this workshop, participants will: • Describe the types and impact of interpersonal communication • Describe the factors affecting interpersonal communication • Develop the qualities of interpersonal skills for personal and team effectiveness • Apply effective listening and questioning skills with others • Give effective feedback on other’s performance • Receive feedback and constructive criticism on one’s own performance • Manage emotions of self and others for positive relationships • Build positive interpersonal communication skills • Describe non-verbal communication and how they can be sent, received and interpreted • Improve non-verbal communication skills and how to read others easily and accurately • Work with people whose personalities and communication styles are different from yours • Handle diverse and difficult people with less stress and more understanding • Manage workforce diversity with effective communication style • Establish workplace interpersonal communication for rapport building
