Event Description:
The estimation of costs for the repair or conversion of marine vessels or structures encompasses work carried out by many trades and can be performed in various locations. To be successful in the pricing of owner’s repair needs requires trade knowledge, knowledge of shipyard or repair practices, knowledge of safety and industry regulatory requirements and the achievable production rates of the entity for which the estimator works. This course will highlight the prerequisites for a marine estimator, examples of the various types of marine repairs (or conversion work), types of contracts encountered on Canada’s west coast and examples of frequently encountered repairs together with various estimating techniques. Course Objectives • Have an understanding of estimating procedures for various types of ship repair. • Understand the roles of a marine estimator. • Understand differing types of Canadian west coast ship repairs and the unique requirements for specialty commercial vessels (cruise ships and tankers). • Differentiate between the various pricing solicitations, and understand the need for specifications, and ship drawings. • Access the mandatory (WCB) safety regulations required for ship repair or conversion work, including: confined space requirements, asbestos removal, and the estimating considerations required for such work. • Understand local dry dock procedures and rates. • Understand the estimating requirements for examples of underwater work, mechanical work, piping repairs, steelwork repairs, painting (exterior hull underwater, hull topside or decks), tank work, hull items and electrical work. • Understand the mechanics of material take off and pricing. • Know how to determine production hour estimates and the need for production hour rates. • Perform total estimation roll up and compare the current estimate with previous projects and gauge the competition.
