Event Description:
For more information and to register, visit, http://www.eventbrite.ca/o/volunteer-victoria-1749897131 Would you benefit from learning about strong practices, and some on-camera practice when it comes to sharing your organization's story with the media? This day-long hands-on workshop is designed to teach participants how to effectively work with all types of media. The media landscape is changing and organizations have to be savvier than ever to share their stories successfully and be represented accurately. This workshop will provide strategies for what to do when you are contacted by media, how to deliver excellent interviews that show your expertise, drive your agenda and help enhance your organization’s reputation on an ongoing basis. The morning of the workshop is theoretical and covers: • Creating and delivering key messages, • Preparing for an interview; how to anticipate and practice questions, • Body language, interview dos and don’ts, • Making it easy on the reporter; providing background and context, • Making the best of a bad situation. The afternoon of the workshop will include practical on-camera training for each participant and review. About the Facilitators: Trisha Lees A native of Vancouver, Trisha completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Victoria and then a graduate certificate in journalism at Vancouver’s Langara College. During several years in Houston, Texas, Trisha worked at Health & Fitness Magazine and a Texas-based lifestyle magazine. She returned to Canada, expanding her communications skills by freelancing for several Calgary publications, working for a communications agency, and later doing communications in the oil and gas industry. She also completed a certificate in Public Relations & Communications Management at the University of Calgary. Trisha’s media relations skills and issues management savvy were honed during several years as communications advisor for Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary leading up to their move to a new hospital building. After successfully completing that project, she relocated to Victoria, joining Tartan Group as a senior account manager and vice-president of operations. At Tartan, Trisha handled senior client relations, developed high-level communications and issues management strategies, and worked with new accounts assessing key communications needs and linking communications to business strategies. Trisha completed an MBA from Royal Roads University with a specialization in management consulting. Christine Gleed Originally a Prince Edward Islander, Christine completed a business degree from St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia before beginning a career in the high tech industry in Ottawa. Her roles during the high-tech boom in the Ottawa-valley included sales and marketing and project management for national and international clients. In 1999, Christine made the change into national politics where she served as a political aid to the federal Solicitor General. From her office on the hill, Christine learned the finer points of daily issues management, crisis communications and the value of planning and executing a multifaceted communications strategy to a variety of stakeholders. Christine relocated to the West Coast in 2002 where she worked in real estate development, first with the provincial government at British Columbia Building Corporation and then at the award-winning eco-community, Dockside Green. At Dockside Green, Christine worked on everything from marketing the development, community and partner-relations and human resources. In 2008, Christine joined Tartan Group; a Victoria-based public relations firm where her role included helping corporate clients raise and manage their reputations through media relations, marketing communications, special events and social media. About the venue: This workshop will be held in the Volunteer Victoria learning centre. Please bring your own lunch; light snacks and beverages will be offered at the morning and afternoon breaks.
