Event Description:
Barry Gough speaks about the unique perspective on the War of 1812 from the viewpoint of western Canada and the United States. Through his illustrated talk, he will describe naval actions in the South Pacific, including the conflict with the USS Essex which kept American naval power from shifting attention to the Columbia during the war. He will also set the stage for the visit of the British warship Racoon to the mouth of the Columbia River in an attempt to assert British claims to sovereignty.
