Event Description: Retired naval officer Jan Drent will discuss the historical context behind Arctic convoy PQ-17 to North Russia which suffered heavy losses in July 1942 as well as the harrowing experiences of the merchant sailors whose ships were lost. Theirs were extraordinary stories of perseverance and survival in open boats under the midnight sun. A little-known aspect of this saga is the assistance by German airmen and u-boat sailors who eventually came to the aid of several of the boatloads of survivors. The talk will be illustrated by contemporary pictures. The privations endured by Allied merchant seamen will be portrayed in the Requiem For PQ-17 to be performed by the Victoria Symphony on Sunday November 10 as part of the Victoria and the Sea project. Included in admission.
