Chamber Gives Standing Ovation for Creation of Auditor General for Local Government
November 24, 2011 – Victoria, BC – The Greater
Victoria Chamber of Commerce applauds the BC provincial government for
proceeding with legislation to form the office of the Auditor
General for Local Government.
“We are delighted that the provincial government agrees with
the need to provide a missing level of oversight for municipal governments,”
said Bruce Carter, CEO at the Greater Victoria Chamber. “Our members
continue to express concern over the unsustainable rate of growth in municipal
spending which has consistently eclipsed both wage and economic growth. It is
our hope that this new office will reinforce a culture of sound fiscal decision
making and ensure that taxpayers are getting the best value for their tax
dollar.”
The policy for an Auditor General for local governments was
first developed by the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce and was
subsequently endorsed by Chambers across the province as BC Chamber policy.
The Chamber’s ongoing “Our Vibrant Community” campaign launched
during the recent municipal election focuses on the pillars of accountability,
affordability, transparency and collaboration. These pillars resonated with
voters and were endorsed by the majority of candidates. With the establishment of
the new office of the Auditor General for Local
Government, the Chamber welcomes an ongoing dialogue about how we build on these
pillars.
The Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce has close to 1,500
members and is the voice of business for the Greater Victoria region. The
Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce has received Accreditation with
Distinction from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.
