We need to make sure local governments live within our means. 4 To maintain our quality of life – If we don’t save for the future we risk the one thing that makes our community so special. Make sure that our elected officials know how important maintaining our quality of life is to you. 3 To make sure our communities work together better – Send a message that you want our local governments to collaborate more to deliver the services and programs we all need. 2 To let local politicians know you are watching – Municipal governments do more to influence your day-to-day life than any other level of government but have the lowest voter turnout during elections. Let our elected officials know that you care and that you will hold them accountable at the ballot box! 1 Most importantly, because there are lots of people who can’t – Last Friday we paused to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms. Honor their service and commitment to our community and exercise the democratic rights they have fought to protect. “Citizens have an opportunity to bring about change by voting for those candidates who support these tenets.” Said Bruce Carter, CEO at the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce. “From garbage collection to road construction, municipal leaders make the decisions which will greatly impact our day to day lives. Let’s vote.” These reasons are consistent with the pillars of good governance on the Chamber website, where candidates have been making comments throughout the election. To see how candidates have responded to the four pillars click here. The pillars of good governance are described in further detail in the September issue of the Chamber’s Business Matters magazine and, and were developed as part of a Chamber-led initiative to get Victorians talking about ways to make our region even better. As we approach a municipal election, Our Vibrant Community is a campaign that highlights and aims to encourage discussion of the big picture, set priorities as a community and encourage debate. As the Voice of Business for the region, the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce has close to 1,500 members and has received Accreditation with Distinction from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. -30- For more information contact: Ellen Henry Bruce Carter Manager of Member Communications Chief Executive Officer Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce Email: ehenry@gvcc.org Email: bcarter@gvcc.org Cell: 250-812-0510
