MEDIA RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Municipal Candidates Urged to Support Vibrant Community Campaign September 21, 2011 – Victoria, BC – The Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce has developed a set of good governance pillars for municipalities and is asking candidates in the upcoming civic elections for their comments and support. The pillars are built on the foundations of affordability, accountability, transparency and collaboration and include specific ideas to ensure that we: Keep tax increases and spending within our means Build our quality of life and save for the future Actively communicate municipal business in a clear and understandable fashion Work individually and with regional stakeholders to deliver services in the most efficient and effective way “Decisions made at the municipal level have a powerful impact on our day to day lives and we encourage voters to become as informed as possible prior to the November election” said Bruce Carter, CEO at the Greater Victoria Chamber. “In a region governed by 13 municipalities and a regional authority, municipal government is clearly big business. The pillars of good governance apply to all large businesses, particularly those funded by taxpayers. We can’t think of any reason not to embrace these concepts.” The pillars of good governance are described in further detail in the latest issue of the Chamber’s Business Matters magazine and were developed as part of a Chamber-led initiative to get Victorians talking about ways to make our region even better. As we approach a municipal election, “Our Vibrant Community” is a campaign that highlights the pillars of good governance and aims to encourage discussion of the big picture, set priorities as a community and encourage debate. The campaign will be detailed on the Chamber’s website and will include space where candidates will be invited to comment on these pillars. The Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce has close to 1,500 members and is the Voice of Business for the Greater Victoria region. The Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce has received Accreditation with Distinction from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. -30- For more information contact: Ellen Henry Bruce Carter Manager of Member Communications Chief Executive Officer Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce Email: ehenry@gvcc.org Email: bcarter@gvcc.org Cell: 250-812-0510
